“Pardon me, Sir, but I have some questions about your schedule for the next few weeks. Might I have a word now?”

Malcolm, sitting at his desk, looked up at the young girl that stood in his office doorway. His eyes took in her far too skinny form, her pale complexion, and her hideous orange hair that was scraped back off her face. Good God, where did they get these ugly young women to fill the secretary pool? Was there an endless supply of them somewhere in London? He grimaced.

“I can come back later, Sir, if you prefer,” she said.

Malcolm could hear the tremor in the girl’s voice. He resisted the urge to say something scathing and watch her run for cover. He didn’t have the time.

“Ask me now,” he snapped. “But be quick about it.”

“Yes, Sir.” She consulted the schedule book that she was holding. “You’ve been invited to speak Tuesday next at a business luncheon for--”

“No, I don’t have time next week. Decline the invitation and clear the rest of my schedule.”

“But you have a very full schedule next week, Sir. Are you certain that you want every appointment canceled?”

Malcolm’s palm itched with a desire to reach out and smack the timid expression straight off of her face. He knew well enough that his hand striking her face would sound like a cracking whip. Particularly satisfying would be the stunned, panicked expression in her eyes after she realized what had happened. He’d have to pass this time though, he was due for a luncheon meeting.

“Cancel everything.” He stood and turned his back to the girl. He let his gaze wander over the courtyard below his office for a long moment before he turned back to her. “I’m going away next week. I fancy a few days by the sea.”
